Each area below describes a kind of problem, how we work on it, and what you would actually receive. Most engagements combine two or three — a strategy question usually turns into a system, and a system usually raises a research question.

Technology Strategy & Advisory

Assessments, architecture and modernization planning that turn uncertainty into a direction you can act on.

The problem

Significant technology decisions are usually made with incomplete information and under time pressure. Systems accumulate, dependencies harden, and the cost of the wrong direction only becomes visible years later — by which point the options have narrowed.

How we help

We start by establishing what exists, what it is actually required to do, and where the real constraints sit. From there we set out a direction with the trade-offs made explicit: what to keep, what to replace, what order to do it in, and what each choice commits you to. The output is a decision you can defend, not a slide deck.

Software & Digital Systems

Specialized applications, platforms, integrations and workflow tools designed around how the work actually happens.

The problem

General-purpose software stops short exactly where the work becomes specific. The gap gets filled with spreadsheets, re-keyed data, and manual steps that nobody has time to document — and that quietly become the system of record.

How we help

We design around the operational reality: who does the work, what they need in front of them, what has to be auditable, and what the surrounding systems can and cannot provide. We build in small, reviewable increments so the shape of the thing can be corrected while it is still cheap to correct, and we hand over code and documentation you can maintain without us.

Data, AI & Automation

Data integration, analytics, decision support and automation — with AI treated as one option among several.

The problem

Most organizations hold far more data than usable information. It sits in systems that disagree with each other, arrives in formats nobody standardized, and gets reconciled by hand. Meanwhile there is pressure to apply AI to something, which is not the same as having a problem AI can solve.

How we help

We begin with the decision that needs to be better, then work backwards to the data and method required. Sometimes that is a model; often it is integration, validation, a clearer interface, or removing a step entirely. Where automated systems inform consequential decisions, we design the human review point into the workflow rather than adding it afterwards, and we agree how the result will be measured before building it.

We will say when AI is not the right tool for a problem. That advice is part of the work.

Research & Applied Innovation

Technical investigation, feasibility work, experiments and prototypes that test an idea before it is committed to.

The problem

Some questions cannot be resolved by planning. Whether a method is accurate enough, whether a signal is there at all, whether an approach survives contact with real data — these have to be tested, and testing them inside a full build is an expensive way to find out.

How we help

We scope the smallest piece of work that can genuinely answer the question, define in advance what would count as a negative result, and run it. Findings are written up in full, including the approaches that did not work and the limits of what the test can support. A well-documented no is a useful outcome.

Product & IP Development

Turning technical concepts and domain expertise into products and reusable technology.

The problem

Hard-won technical insight tends to stay locked inside individual projects. The method that worked once gets rebuilt from scratch the next time, and the knowledge that made it work never becomes an asset the organization owns.

How we help

We help identify what is genuinely reusable, then do the work of turning it into something with a defined scope, a maintainable architecture and documentation that outlives the people who built it. This applies to our own initiatives as much as to client work — we develop products through Sideband and understand what that transition demands.

Technical Knowledge & Learning Systems

Specialized technical education, knowledge bases and learning platforms that make complex expertise usable.

The problem

Specialized technical knowledge usually lives with a small number of people. When they are unavailable — or move on — the capability leaves with them, and general training material is rarely specific enough to replace it.

How we help

We build learning and reference material the way we build systems: structured around what a practitioner actually needs to do, written by people who understand the subject technically, and maintained as the underlying technology changes. That can mean curriculum, a searchable reference base, or a platform to deliver and assess it.

How engagements start

Almost always with a conversation and a short scoping exercise, so that both sides understand the problem before anyone commits to a budget or a method. Where the right first step is a small piece of investigative work rather than a full engagement, we will propose that instead.
